ScamAlerts Algorithm
Explainer
This guide explains ScamAlert’s domain trust rating system, designed to help you assess the trustworthiness of a website. The system assigns scores ranging from 1 to 100, with a higher score indicating a higher likelihood that the website is safe and reliable.
- 1 to 20 – Very Likely Unsafe: Websites in this range have a high risk of being malicious or untrustworthy. They may contain malware, phishing scams, or other threats. Avoid entering personal information on these sites.
- 21 to 40 – Likely Unsafe: These sites pose less of a risk than those in the previous category, but caution is still advised. Be careful with downloads or transactions.
- 41 to 60 – Caution Recommended: Websites in this category are neither highly dangerous nor fully safe. Further research may be needed before trusting them.
- 61 to 80 – Likely Safe: These websites are generally considered safe, but always be cautious when providing sensitive information such as payment details.
- 81 to 100 – Very Likely Safe: Websites with this score are typically very trustworthy and often belong to recognized or established organizations.
- Disclaimer: Always perform your own checks in addition to our Trust Score. Domain trust scores are estimates and should not be the sole basis for evaluating a website.
- Ratings can change: A website’s trust rating can improve or decline based on new information, such as changes in content, infrastructure, or user reviews.
Fighting online scams is a continuous battle, and ScamAlert’s algorithm plays a crucial role. It evaluates various factors to provide you with a clear Trust Score (a percentage) almost instantly.
While we can’t reveal every detail of our analysis to avoid giving scammers an advantage, we aim to offer insight into how the Trust Score is calculated.
Our Trust Score is based on both positive and negative indicators. Certain factors increase a website’s score, while others reduce it. The final score reflects all relevant elements and may change as new data is gathered, such as updated website content or new user reviews.
If you own a website, you can view the Positive Highlights and Negative Highlights on the Trust Score page to understand the reasoning behind the score.
- Popularity: A website’s Tranco Rank indicates its popularity based on visitor traffic. High traffic often suggests trustworthiness, while scam sites usually have low traffic.
- Social Media Activity: Active engagement on social platforms shows transparency and user interaction, increasing the Trust Score.
- Positive Reviews: Reviews from platforms like ScamAlert.com, TrustPilot, and SiteJabber are considered. Positive feedback boosts the Trust Score.
- Website Performance: Fast, well-performing websites indicate professionalism. Poor performance may lower the Trust Score.
- Website Security: HTTPS and other security measures increase confidence and positively impact the Trust Score.
- Based in a High-Risk Country: Certain regions have higher scam activity. This alone doesn’t mean a site is unsafe, but it can affect the Trust Score.
- Website Ownership: Hidden or private ownership details reduce transparency and may lower trust.
- Age of the Website: Very new websites may have lower scores, as scammers often use short-lived domains.
- High-Risk Server: Hosting on servers known for malicious activity can reduce a website’s Trust Score.
- Ecommerce Platforms: Platforms like Shopify are sometimes exploited by scammers to create fake stores quickly, which can affect trust ratings.
ScamAlert’s algorithm is constantly evolving to stay ahead of scammers. While we’ve highlighted some key factors, many more work behind the scenes.
We continuously refine our approach to protect users from new and emerging threats. Stay safe by always checking ScamAlert before making any online decisions.
